Chapter 3 · Planets
Nine planets play the roles in your chart. Seven you can see in the sky; two — Rāhu and Ketu — are shadow points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. Together, they are the cast.
Rulership (Swāmi) — Every sign has a planet that rules it, like the head of a household. When that planet sits in its own sign, it is at home. Comfortable. Strong.
Exaltation (Uchcha) — Each planet has one sign where its qualities shine at their best — that's its exaltation. And one sign where they struggle — that's its debilitation (nīcha). Exalted Jupiter in Cancer is one of the most celebrated placements; debilitated Mars in Cancer, one of the most tested.
Where the Sun sits, you cannot hide who you are. It's the house you'll eventually shine in — or struggle in, until you own it.
The Moon is how you feel from the inside — long before you speak. Her sign becomes your emotional weather.
Mars is the friction that moves you. Well-placed, you finish things. Poorly-placed, you fight everyone — including yourself.
Mercury shapes how you learn and how you speak. He picks up the mood of whatever planet he sits with — like a good student.
Guru expands whatever he touches. That's why exalted Jupiter is loved — but he also expands what's already large. The trick is aiming him.
Venus is your taste, your sweetness, and your ease. Where she sits, you find beauty — sometimes more beauty than the mind can hold.
Śani is called cruel, but he's the truest teacher in the chart. What he tests, he eventually gives back — solid, hard-earned, permanent.
Rāhu drags you into what you didn't grow up around. It looks like ambition; it feels like restlessness. Both can be true.
Ketu is the past-life reservoir. Where he sits, you already know something — sometimes so well that you now wave it away.
Rāhu and Ketu are not planets you can see in the sky. They are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's — mathematical, but treated as forces because their signature in a chart is unmistakable.
They always sit exactly opposite each other. Wherever Rāhu is pulling you toward the unfamiliar, Ketu, at the opposite house, is releasing what you already carry too much of. This is the axis your life is trying to balance.
Every kundli's first house is called the ascendant (lagna). The planet that rules the ascendant's sign is your lagna lord — arguably the single most important planet in your chart.
Look at your chart. Your ascendant sign is in the top-diamond house. Which planet rules that sign (from the chart above)? Now find that planet in your chart — which house is it sitting in? That house is where your life will pull you the most.
If your ascendant is Pisces, your lord is Guru (Jupiter). If your ascendant is Taurus, it's Śukra (Venus). And so on.
