Common practices

  • Many people eat once a day, after sunset.
  • The meal often has urad dal or something made with black sesame.
  • Helping workers, elders and people in need is seen as an important part of this vrat.

The katha

King Vikramaditya once held a gathering where the nine grahas asked which of them was the greatest. The king set nine seats of different metals in a row, and Shani dev's seat, made of iron, came last. Shani dev calmly said that in time the king would understand Shani's place.

In the years that followed, troubles came to the king one after another. A horse carried him far from home into a strange land. A necklace vanished from a merchant's house, and the king was wrongly blamed. He was parted from his royal life and lived humbly, working at an oil-presser's mill. Through all of it, he stayed patient and truthful.

One evening he sang raag Deepak so beautifully that the lamps of the town lit up, and the princess chose him as her husband. Soon after, Shani dev appeared, and the king bowed to him. Shani dev returned to the king all that had been taken from him. The king asked only one thing: that no one else go through such hardship. Shani dev said those who remember him with devotion on Saturdays would feel his kindness.

Many families tell this story to remember that patience and honesty carry us through hard times.

Retold in our own words from the traditional story.

Udyapan

When the sankalp is complete, many families do the udyapan on the last Saturday. A Shani puja, a small havan, and giving food, black sesame, urad, oil or clothes to people in need are common.
