Jyotish 101 · Lesson 1
Each house asks something of you. This page explains it in plain words — not to frighten, but to understand.
A kundli is a map — a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born. That map is divided into twelve houses, and each house is one area of your life: your body and temperament, your family, your work, your inner world, your relationships.
Planets are the characters. Signs are their mood. Houses are the stages on which those characters play their roles. Which planets sit in a house, and which planets look at it, tells you what that area of your life is asking of you right now.
· Body, temperament, direction of life, first impression.
This house says: know yourself first. Before you become like others, become yourself.
· Wealth, savings, speech, the family's settled base.
This house asks: does what you say come back to you? Speech and wealth are one current.
· Courage, effort, short journeys, siblings, skills, communication.
This house wakes the warrior in you. The first step toward difficulty — that's what the third house wants.
· Mother, home, vehicles, land, peace of mind, roots of childhood.
Where you truly rest — that is the fourth house. Before you win outside, you have to settle inside.
· Children, intellect, creativity, romance, past-life merit.
This house asks: what do you create? What you give birth to — a child, an art, an idea — comes from here.
· Illness, debts, competitors, daily service, discipline.
This house looks heavy, but teaches the most. Difficulty is not an enemy — it is a teacher.
· Spouse, partners, public life, business.
The person in front of you is your mirror. The seventh house asks: whom can you truly make your own?
· Longevity, sudden change, hidden knowledge, inheritance.
This house remakes you from the inside. What was old leaves so that what is new inside you can be born.
· Father, guru, dharma, long journeys, higher study, fortune.
This house asks: what do you believe, and why? The 'why' of your life comes from here.
· Profession, standing in society, karma, duty.
This is the house of what your hands do. What you give to the world — that is here.
· Income, elder siblings, friends, fulfilment of desires.
This house shows the fruit of your work. But be careful — what you want is not always what you need.
· Expenses, foreign lands, renunciation, solitude, moksha.
This is not the house of ending, but of release. What you let go of is also a way of moving forward.
An experienced Jyotishi never reads one house alone. They look at the sign the house holds, where that sign's lord is sitting, which planets are influencing it by aspect, and which dasha (planetary period) is currently active. All of these combine into a single picture.
So there is no such thing as a plainly “strong” or “weak” house. Every house has its own opportunities and its own lessons. What looks hard is often the deepest teacher.
